Sport in the Park

From www.wandsworth.gov:

Children and young people will once again be able to enjoy some great sporting and leisure activities in Battersea Park later this month, thanks to a local crime busting charity.

Between Tuesday, July 24 and Friday, July 27, young people aged between eight and 16 can enjoy a range of activities in the park thanks to the Battersea Summer Scheme’s annual Sport in the Park initiative.

The project is organised by the Battersea Crime Prevention Panel and funded through the generous sponsorship and support of a range of local companies and organisations, including the council and the Metropolitan Police. The aim is to provide young people with constructive, interesting and worthwhile activities during the school summer holiday and encourage good citizenship.

The daily list of attractions includes football, tennis, judo, archery, karate and dance. For those with a head for heights there’s a climbing wall, while other activities include circus skills, trapeze, mixed martial arts, crazy golf as well as arts, music, fashion Zumba and yoga.

Many of the local youth clubs also attend to promote the opportunities available to young people in the borough. There will also be advice available and the chance to find out more about some of the organisations that take part, including the London Fire Brigade and the NHS. All the organisations donate their time and resources, offering help and advice along with inspiring and entertaining activities.

The scheme has been running every year since 1992 and as well as providing safe activities to keep young people occupied and engaged in the summer holidays, and prevent them from becoming involved with, or victims of, crime, it also provides a welcome lifeline to families on lower incomes who may be unable to afford more costly leisure activities for their children.

The events are held at Battersea Park’s Millennium Arena between 11.30am and 4.30pm. Entry per day is just £1 and there is no need to book a place
